Welcome to System Restore!
System Restore is a panfandom jamjar game based on the Digimon franchise, mostly the video games and "null canon", with elements from the anime and other Digimon media. Unknown forces draw your character into the Digital World, where they will meet a Digimon that will be their partner, receive a Digivice, and pursue their own goals in a wide, wild world.
No. The Digital World of System Restore is an original setting, with elements borrowed from canon Digimon locations, but no reliance on player familiarity with those locations. We also have our own wiki of Digimon species, which only features information relevant to the System Restore setting, unlike general fandom resources. The game and world info pages should be read by all players, familiar with Digimon or otherwise, and covers pretty much everything important.
>_ A Digimon partner character, designed by you in your character's app and played by you alongside your character.
>_ Game mechanics, setting elements, and events focused on character interaction and development.
>_ Digimon partner evolution mechanics that reward player initiative, cooperation, activity, and contributions to the game environment.
>_ A "hub town" that grows based on player character contributions, a friendly NPC organization, a vast outlying world for characters to explore, and a network for keeping in touch across long distances.
>_ Stories and settings in line with the tone of the Digimon franchise - generally light-hearted, adventurous, and nostalgic, sometimes dramatic and action-based, with dark elements but no graphic content.
>_ A "weak"/background overarching metaplot, with stronger focus on player-prompted or player-run episodic miniplots.
>_ Simple, automated activity check, run every two months, with rewards for bonus activity and engagement.

What characters are allowed?
>_ Canon characters, original characters from original universes, and original characters from OC-friendly canon universes (like tabletop games or MMOs). If you are unsure whether a canon universe counts as such, just ask.
>_ Characters from Digimon canons are allowed, but must abide by some special provisions. See [this page] for details.
>_ Characters from newly-released canons may not be apped until two months after the release of their canon. This rule applies to sequels and remakes with additional material. If you want to app from an episodic canon with frequent updates, or another canon that poses problems under this rule, ask first and we will come up with an appropriate policy.
>_Characters from canons that are available unofficially (fan-translated) in English ahead of an expected official (published) English release must wait until two months after the English release, in accordance with the new canons rule. Previously fan-translated canons that receive unexpected English releases are grandfathered in and may be apped from before the official release.
>_ Minor characters or characters requiring extrapolation or headcanon are allowed. All characters are held to the same standard; a player must demonstrate in their app that they can engage fully with the setting and with other characters as fleshed-out individuals. As long as this standard is met, and the app explains what is and is not extrapolation, characters will be considered for acceptance.
>_ Real people may not be apped, including comedian personalities and similar. Fictionalized versions of historical figures (ie Fate/ series) are allowed.
>_ Characters may be rejected at mod discretion for premises that would cause excessive upset to the playerbase, or for being extravagantly unsuited to the game setting/tone.

Applications are open for the first two weeks of each Activity Check period (ie every two months; see the next section for AC details). App processing starts immediately after AC results are posted. Apps are processed in the order they are posted, throughout the two weeks, and players may start posting to the game comms as soon as their character journal is given posting access.
The specifics are highly customizable, and part of your application will be telling us exactly how your character makes their way into the Digital World. Here are some suggestions, though:
>_ Characters often enter the Digital World through contact with computer technology from their home world; falling through a portal that appears on a screen, falling unconscious in proximity of digital technology and waking up in the Digital World, entering through some form of cyberspace, etc. Characters from worlds without digital technology may enter the Digital World from places where information is stored, like libraries or spooky ancient ruins, or by more "typical" methods of crossing over into other worlds, like through dreams, mysterious doorways or passages, or getting lost in the woods.
>_ Entering the Digital World can be a sudden, accidental event, or it can be foreshadowed by strange phenomena for days or weeks beforehand - digital devices malfunctioning, strange roars in the distance, or glimpses of unusual creatures out of the corner of your eye.
>_ Entry can be voluntary or involuntary. Your character may be contacted and invited to the Digital World - perhaps by their partner, or by another Digimon calling out for help, or maybe something even more mysterious? Or maybe something malicious...
>_ (If you want your character to be contacted by a mysterious, significant entity, keep in mind that the setting is populated by many powerful NPCs not yet revealed to players. You may want to keep the details vague at first and match it to a specific NPC when the opportunity arises.)
>_ As the game matures, we intend to have occasional New Character Events to help new characters "catch up" to older ones or gain a foothold in the setting. These events will be mod-directed storylines that new players in the given app round/s may integrate into their character's arrival; specific reasons for their arrival in the Digital World, experiences that accompany their entry to the game, origins for their Digimon partner, and more. These events are always optional and players apping in during these rounds will always be able to opt out.
Your character's actual arrival in the Digital World can be backdated to up to a month before the day you are accepted and start playing. If you want them to step fresh-faced and wide-eyed into the game on that day, you absolutely may, but you can also come up with up to a month's worth of backstory in the Digital World - time for them to meet their partner, get their bearings, have some small adventures, make some friends or enemies, and anything else you want to square away before your first post or thread in the game. You may involve other player characters in this interval, as long as you have their knowledge, permission, and input. We expect and encourage players to take advantage of this interval to give their character the foothold in the setting they want to kick off from - are they fond of the Digital World and ready to be its protector? Do they have loyalties to a particular place or person? Are they determined to track down some kind of treasure or mystery? It's your character (and their partner), and your story.

In System Restore, characters are supposed to rely on their Digimon partner's strength to protect themselves and achieve their goals. On the other hand, supernatural powers can be part of what makes a character who they are. We want to strike a balance.
Upon entering the Digital World, characters are converted from an analog to digital form. (Characters that were already wholly or partially digital, like AIs and robots, may also undergo alterations; AIs may manifest in distinct bodies, for example, if players prefer it.) In the process, characters may find that their powers, abilities, or supernatural traits don't work quite the same way as usual. Rather than depowering all characters as a blanket rule, we will first ask players to specify in their applications what powers their characters will enter the Digital World with and how they will be dampened/altered if necessary, then case-by-case changes will be requested and applied upon acceptance. Requests for power changes will not count against a player's acceptance to the game or good standing in it, and are an expected part of the acceptance process, so please be patient with us.
In general, the most combat-capable player characters should be able to hold their own against an average Adult-level Digimon at most. A combat-capable character of more average skill should be able to take on Child-level Digimon but not Adult-levels. A character's Digimon partner should be their most effective defense against Adult-level and stronger Digimon. Base your power adjustments around this general rule. We will not harshly restrict players who want their character to fight alongside their partner, but please keep in mind that this should be a difficult feat, and do what you need to to encourage reliance on the partner.
Players may have their characters' physical forms altered upon entry if they want to shrink down a character that is normally very large, change the nature of a character that relies on a very specific food source, or otherwise remove an onerous restriction.
Characters' powers and supernatural traits may also be altered to better fit the setting or intersect with setting mechanics. Powers may be linked to the vitality of Digimon partners, turned into affinities with particular Digimon species or powersets, changed aesthetically to be related to computer technology, or simply dampened for player convenience.
Ultimately, players should try to adjust their characters' powers to suit the premise of relying on a Digimon partner while retaining character flavor they still want to play with, and should then expect a second round of adjustments after mod review. If you are having trouble with the process or need advice, you may submit questions to mods in this page's comments at any time. Keep in mind that characters will have opportunities to access a variety of new powers in System Restore, both through their Digimon partner's evolution and potentially through acquiring tools, artifacts, and Digivice programs.

Characters arrive in the Digital World carrying whatever was on their person. Any items with supernatural abilities are subject to the same conditions as character abilities, and must be detailed in the application. Note that mods will have a greater preference for dampening or sealing item powers than for character powers, and we will probably issue stricter requests for items.
Digital technology such as phones or computers will glitch out upon arrival in the Digital World and will need to be repaired and modified to function correctly...with one exception, that is.
Digital technology such as phones or computers will glitch out upon arrival in the Digital World and will need to be repaired and modified to function correctly...with one exception, that is.
That one exception is your character's Digivice. A Digivice is an essential tool, a suite of software that regulates and enhances the connection between your character and their partner, grants access to the game network, and potentially much more. This software suite installs itself to an item on your character's person upon their arrival in the Digital World.
Digivices are usually contained in some form of electronic technology - a cell phone, a watch, an MP3 player - but they can be installed to any object at all, originally digital or not. More details on Digivices and their functions will be given in a later section.

How do I stay in the game?
Activity in System Restore is checked every two months and requires at least fifteen comments within that two-month period, made on posts dated within those two months. Furthermore, activity check is automated using the AC Savior utility. Players do not have to submit links to their activity to keep characters in the game unless they believe an error has been made.
Note that because of the use of AC Savior, only activity that occurs on the game's IC community counts towards remaining in the game. Threads hosted on player character journals will not be counted.
Due to the longer-than-average AC period and the automation of the process, System Restore does not use strikes or have a formal system for hiatuses. Qualifying activity can be made at any point, at any pace, and over any number of threads during the two-month period. Characters that fail AC will be removed from the game, and cannot be apped back in by the same player until the next two-month AC period has concluded.
In addition to these basic requirements for staying in the game, characters may earn credit for fulfilling bonus activity requirements, some of which are checked automatically and some of which must be submitted by players. This credit can be used towards Digimon partner evolution and other IC and OOC benefits.

Bonus activity is part of a broader points system meant to reward players for building a better game environment. Details on spending Activity Points (AP) on Digimon partner evolutions, item "regains", and other benefits can be found on the [Evolution and AP] page.
Players receive a minimum default allowance of AP every two months simply for playing in the game. Participation in some events may reward AP, as will running player events that receive a minimum threshold of participation.
AP received through bonus activity works like a bimonthly checklist. Characters can fulfill a small variety of conditions - such as making open posts, clearing higher thresholds of activity by raw comment count, diversifying thread partners, playing with newly-apped characters, participating in events, or contributing to events - to earn additional bimonthly allowances of AP, up to a maximum. These conditions may change over the course of the game, as we get a handle on what types of activity benefit the game environment. For current details, see the [Bonus Activity] page.

There is no penalty for dropping the game through the [Taken Characters] page, and we encourage players to take a break from the game and return later if they notice their interest and activity falling below AC requirements. AP and partner evolution process will be frozen, and can be reclaimed if the character is re-apped.
A previously dropped character can be re-apped so long as another player is not currently playing the same character in the game. Players re-apping a character should use the re-app form on the [Application] page, rather than the new character app form.
ICly, dropped characters may have their absence explained in one of two ways. The first way, which we intend to be more common, is that the character is ejected from the Digital World (or allowed to leave it voluntarily), generally to the world they came from but rarely to another world. Their Digimon partner may go with them or be left behind in the Digital World. The second option is for the character to remain in the Digital World, but not interact with other characters for the time that they remain dropped. If lack of interaction is not realistic for a character, and players still in the game would have to go to lengths to account for their absence, we encourage simply removing them from the Digital World.
Players are free to determine what happens after their drop, and if they choose to re-app later, they must submit a summary of the time between their last drop and the character's re-entry to the game. They may have spent less or more time in another world than has passed in the Digital World, or the events of their canon may diverge upon their return due to the presence of their partner or different actions on their part.

DIGIMON PARTNER
- you design them.
- they can be child or adult level, if they start child they get some bonuses
- there's a section on the app for this
- you can build their meeting with your character into that up-to-one-month arrival backstory
- or you can start threading and play out the time around the digimon meeting your character. if you delay the partnership, you have one month in that direction, too; the partnership has to be established by your first ac turnin
- either way it all has to be established when you app.
DROPS?
- need to figure out a non-alarming way of characters leaving the setting
- degree of AUing allowed, characters can return home with their partners and be reapped after
- option: npc status
- option: lost in the digital world
- option: ejected with or without partner

WELCOME TO ROOT VILLAGE
sysres is an open world sandbox game, and it has a network to support long-distance character interactions, but it's designed around the assumption that your character homebases in root village.
it's a tiny little shadow of a town at the base of a very fucking big tree, and it's a convenient place for characters to gather because it's home to an organization that explicitly friendly to and supportive of otherworldly visitors.
- characters are very likely to hear from
